Wrestling with Truth January 8, 2012

Our topic for January 8, 2012 was SIN UNDERSTOOD AS IMPROPER WORSHIP based on the 2 KINGS 17 account of the demise of the northern tribes (Israel).

  • This scriptural account represents the end of the northern kingdom
  • Hoshea is the last king
  • It is an obituary which is more of a dirge rather than a eulogy
  • God’s people became divided after the death of Solomon
  • Northern tribes (Israel) separated themselves from the blessings of God
  • The royal line of David continued in the south (Judah)
  • Political intrigue and sin abounded in the north in the 200 years from around 900 BC to around 700 BC throughout the reign of 19 kings
  • God allowed enemies to overrun the north
  • People were deported and the whole area became a wasteland
  • 2 Kings 17 tells us why God brought the northern kingdom down

Israel participated in a woeful mixture of religion which developed a syncretistic faith that was not one thing or another.  God’s long-suffering patience came to an end because of these failures on the part of Israel delineated in this chapter:

  • [Hoshea] did evil in the eyes of the Lord
  • Israelites sinned against the Lord their God
  • they worshiped other gods
  • they followed the practices of the nations the Lord had driven out before them
  • the Israelites secretly did things against the Lord their god that were not right
  • they built themselves high places in all their towns
  • they set up sacred stones and Asherah poles on every high hill and under every spreading tree
  • at every high place they burned incense
  • they did wicked things that provoked the Lord to anger
  • they worshiped idols
  • but they would not listen
  • they rejected his decrees and the covenant he had made with their fathers and the warnings he had given them
  • they followed worthless idols and themselves became worthless
  • they imitated the nations around them
  • they forsook all the commands of the Lord their God
  • they bowed down to all the starry hosts
  • they worshiped Baal
  • they sacrificed their sons and daughters in the fire
  • they practiced divination and sorcery and
  • sold themselves to do evil in the eyes of the Lord, provoking him to anger
  • the Israelites persisted in all the sins of Jeroboam and did not turn away from them
  • nevertheless, each national group made its own gods
  • they worshiped the Lord, but they also appointed all sorts of their own people to officiate for them as priests in the shrines at the high places
  • they worshiped the Lord, but they also served their own gods in accordance with the customs of the nations from which they had been brought
  • to this day they persist in their former practices
  • they neither worship the Lord nor adhere to the decrees and ordinances

Which of these apply to us and our nation today?

Overall the people of Israel (northern kingdom) did not listen or obey; they pretended to worship the LORD while they were serving their idols.

“So the LORD was very angry with Israel and removed them from his presence.”  They were deported to Assyria.

God even sends lions into the land to get their attention (2 Kings 17: 25-26).

God, however, has called us to be faithful to his law and to be transformed by his grace and truth rather than being conformed to the world around us (see Romans 12: 1-2).

2011 in review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2011 annual report for this blog.

Here’s an excerpt:

A New York City subway train holds 1,200 people. This blog was viewed about 4,200 times in 2011. If it were a NYC subway train, it would take about 4 trips to carry that many people.

Homemade Christmas Presents (2011)

I like the idea of homemade gifts for Christmas. I didn’t have as much time this year as I might have, because I was busy in New York helping care for my mom. So I tried to make up for it when I got back home in mid-November. Here are some of the gifts I made which I can now show you.

If you click on the pictures you can see a bigger version.

Smile.  JT

Christmas News 2011

Christmas 2011

Dear Friends and Family,

Timothy and I want to send you our most sincere wishes for a Christmas season filled with the love and peace of Christ.  He is enough—for the good days and for the challenging ones.  If you do not know Him,  we pray that you soon will invite Him into your heart, life, and mind.

2011 has been a year of significant transition for us.  In May Timothy completed his work at Tyndale University College & Seminary in Toronto.  The many goodbyes were bitter sweet: such sincere expressions of love, coupled with the reality of our leaving many dear friends.  Then, a few hours  transported us from one world—tiny apartment, mega-city, multi-ethnic, North, snow that stays!—to another very  different one—our “old home” in Kentucky, again—yard work, small town, comparatively insular, vibrant church family, South, snow that goes!

Just a few days after, Memorial Day plans took us to New York to be with family.  The shocking moment at the picnic when I realized Mom could not feed herself gave notice of difficult days ahead.  In July I returned to my parents, initially by myself, to help my siblings address the crisis resulting from both my parents being hospitalized at the same time.  Dad got considerably better but Mom’s Alzheimer’s continued to ravage her being until by September she could no longer walk, stand, or care for herself.  I stayed for a month in the summer and returned for two months in the fall.  Timothy split his time between New York and Kentucky.

In the midst of this, we contemplated what it means to be retired really and, for me, the brutal recognition that I was turning 65 (but didn’t feel that old!).  What will the future hold?  Where do we go from here?  Will we have enough money to last ‘til we are ninety?  And on and on.

Well, I did finally really get to come home—just in time for Thanksgiving!  (We now have paid help coming in daily for my parents and the situation is much more stable, although it seems Mom continues to decline.) Timothy was really happy to see me!  And I, him.

I usually do quite a bit of sewing for Christmas, but with all the family stress, I made only minimal progress at my parents’, so when I got home I really had to get busy!  Saturday Sarah and Clint and Madi arrived from Portland (Oregon) and will be with us for two weeks.  So wonderful!  And Jeremy and Laura and Ben and Adah (Indianapolis) will arrive on the weekend, as well as Evan (Phoenix).  So we will all be together for Christmas.  We are thrilled!

As the year comes to a close, we want to give thanks to God for his continued blessing and care.  Our prayer is that in 2012 we might be as faithful to Him as he has been to us.

With grateful hearts,

Joyce and Timothy

Symbols and their referents are often:

  • Inexpressible:   (1 Pet 1:8 NIV)  Though you have not seen him, you love him; and even though you do not see him now, you believe in him and are filled with an inexpressible and glorious joy . . . ,
  • Indescribable:   (2 Cor 9:15 NIV)  Thanks be to God for his indescribable gift!
  • Unspeakable:   (Rom 11:33 NIV)  Oh, the depth of the riches of the wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable his judgments, and his paths beyond tracing out!
  • Ineffable:  from William James’ definition of religious experience

We need to make the transition from symbols to the reality that stands behind the symbol.

In class today, we used the carol “Hark the Herald Angels Sing” (Charles Wesley, 1739) to consider “theological symbols” or concepts contained therein.

This carol could be called A MESSAGE OF GRACE AND HOPE.  We considered its five stanzas as follows:

1.   ANNOUNCEMENT OF JESUS BIRTH
Hark! The herald angels sing,  –Luke 2
“Glory to the newborn King;  –Rev 7
Peace on earth, and mercy mild,  –Rom 5:1; Ps 85:10
God and sinners reconciled!”  –2 Cor 5:19 (reconciliation)
Joyful, all ye nations rise,  –Luke 2:10 (joy, hope)
Join the triumph of the skies;  –2 Cor 2:14  (triumph)
With th’angelic host proclaim,
“Christ is born in Bethlehem!”

Hark! the herald angels sing,
“Glory to the newborn King!”

2.   WHO IS JESUS?
Christ, by highest Heav’n adored;
Christ the everlasting Lord;  –(deity)
Late in time, behold Him come,  –Gal 4:4 (fullness of time)
Offspring of a virgin’s womb.  –(virgin birth)
Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;  –(incarnation)
Hail th’incarnate Deity,  –John 1:14 (deity; incarnation)
Pleased with us in flesh to dwell,  –Ps 8:4; Heb 2:6; Ps 144:3 (identification)
Jesus our Emmanuel.  –Is 7:14 (God with us)

3.   WHAT JESUS DOES FOR US
Hail the heav’nly Prince of Peace!  –(peace)
Hail the Sun of Righteousness!  –Is 9:6-7 (righteousness)
Light and life to all He brings,  –John 1:4-9 (light and life)
Ris’n with healing in His wings.  –Mal 4:2 (healing)
Mild He lays His glory by,  –Phil 2:5-8 (kenosis; self-emptying)
Born that man no more may die.  –Heb 2:8; 2 Cor 8:9; John 11:26 (no more death)
Born to raise the sons of earth,
Born to give them second birth.  –John 3:3 (second birth)

4.   CONQUERING OF SIN
Come, Desire of nations, come,  –Hag 2:6-7 (long-awaited desire; anticipation. hope)
Fix in us Thy humble home;  –John 14:23  (our home)
Rise, the woman’s conqu’ring Seed,  –Gen 3:15 (proto-evangelion)
Bruise in us the serpent’s head.
Now display Thy saving power,  –(salvation)
Ruined nature now restore;  –Gal 5:24; Romans 8 (restoration)
Now in mystic union join  –(union)
Thine to ours, and ours to Thine.

5.   RESTORATION OF LIKENESS
Adam’s likeness, Lord, efface,
Stamp Thine image in its place:  –(new image; God’s image)
Second Adam from above,  –1 Cor 15:45-47 (second Adam)
Reinstate us in Thy love. — (love; holiness)
Let us Thee, though lost, regain,  –(restoration)
Thee, the Life, the inner man:  –(true life)
O, to all Thyself impart,   –(imparted holiness)
Formed in each believing heart.  –(formation; believing)

Peanut Butter Cookies

I just finished making 64 “Peanut Butter Cookie Kisses”.  Making cookies takes lots of numbers because you have to count everything — 2 1/2 cups, 1/4 tsp , 1 tsp, 2 tsp, 1 1/4 cups, etc.  And, do a lot of stirring (except our mixer really did the work for me).  With a wife who is a chemist, you just have to be accurate or maybe there will be an explosion!

The recipe Joyce gave me said 72 cookies; the recipe on the package of kisses said 60; so I guess I must be average with my 64.

I am sending this to you so that you can rejoice in what I am eating during Christmastide and maybe you can also be a bit sad about what you are missing by not being here.

The hardest part of this cookie-making enterprise is not eating the kisses between their unwrapping and their being placed on the hot cookies.  Smile.

Symbols, Part 2

We continued on with our study of symbols and signs and thought especially about Christmas-related symbols, both secular and sacred.

We used the following hymns and poems because of their references to symbols and signs:

What star is this, with beams so bright,
More lovely than the noonday light?
’Tis sent to announce a newborn King,
Glad tidings of our God to bring.

Rejoice, Rejoice!
Emmanuel, shall come to thee, O Israel

’Tis now fulfilled what God decreed,
“From Jacob shall a star proceed”;
And lo! the Eastern sages stand
To read in heaven the Lord’s command.

While outward signs the star displays,
An inward light the Lord conveys,
And urges them, with force benign,
To seek the Giver of the sign.

 True love can brook no dull delay;
Nor toil nor dangers stop their way
Home, kindred, father land and all
They leave at their Creator’s call.

O, while the star of heavenly grace
Invites us, Lord, to seek Thy face,
May we no more that grace repel,
Or quench that light which shines so well!

To God the Father, God the Son,
And Holy Spirit, Three in One,
May every tongue and nation raise
An endless song of thankful praise!
–Carolus Coffin (1676-1749)
Tune:  Veni Emmanuel

Immortal love, forever full,
Forever flowing free,
Forever shared, forever whole,
A never ebbing sea!

We may not climb the heavenly steeps
To bring the Lord Christ down;
In vain we search the lowest deeps,
For Him no depths can drown.

O Lord and master of us all,
Whate’er our name or sign,
We own Thy sway, we hear Thy call,
We test our lives by Thine.

The letter fails, the systems fall,
And every symbol wanes;
The Spirit over brooding all,
Eternal love remains.
–John Greanleaf Whittier (1807-1892)
Tune: Serenity

Like as a mother comforteth
O words of gentle worth!
So will I comfort you, declares
The Lord of all the earth.

He bends in faithful watchfulness;
He slumbers not nor sleeps;
Above His trusting child the Lord
A constant vigil keeps.

He patient is, as mothers are
Who love their children well;
Our faults and failings He forgives;
His mercies—who can tell!

Like as a mother, grant, O God,
This likeness e’er may be
A holy symbol to declare
The love that dwells in Thee.
–William Runyan (1870-1957)
Tune:  Christmas

Love came down at Christmas,
Love all lovely, love divine;
Love was born at Christmas,
Star and angels gave the sign.

Worship we the Godhead,
Love incarnate, love divine;
Worship we our Jesus:
But wherewith for sacred sign?

Love shall be our token,
Love shall be yours and love be mine,
Love to God and to all men,
Love for plea and gift and sign.
–Christina Rosetti (1830-1894)

We closed with the beautiful prayer by Robert Louis Stevenson.

Loving Father, Help us remember the birth of Jesus,
that we may share in the song of the angels,
the gladness of the shepherds,
and worship of the wise men.

Close the door of hate and open the door of love all over the world.
Let kindness come with every gift and good desires with every greeting.
Deliver us from evil by the blessing which Christ brings,
and teach us to be merry with clear hearts.

May the Christmas morning make us happy to be thy children,
and Christmas evening bring us to our beds
with grateful thoughts,
forgiving and forgiven, for Jesus’ sake.   Amen.

Preparing for Christmas

Well, it is great to be in our own home in the days leading up to Christmas.

As we await the advent of Jesus’ birthday, there are lots of fun things to do in preparation:

  • listen to many Christmas records (LP 33 rpm vinyl) and a radio station that plays “modern” Christmas music all the time (94.5 FM)
  • choose and cut down a Christmas tree from a field of trees as the rain pours down from heaven
  • transport the tree, borrow a truck with a sticky first gear and remind myself of how to change gears with a clutch — I did very well
  • put up Christmas lights across the front of the house
  • put up the Christmas tree in the living room and then watch Joyce add the decorations
  • start thinking about fun Christmas food
  • make a major trip to Kroger’s to replenish the larder; and then try not to eat all the goodies too quickly
  • think about Christmas presents and buy some of them
  • start getting used to the cold weather (not as cold as Toronto and much less snow)
  • talk a lot about warm places to travel in January
  • converse with friends and family in person and on the phone
  • watch Miracle on 34th Street (1947 version)
  • read thoughtful material on Christmas themes
  • prepare for the WWT (adult Bible study) Christmas party coming up soon
  • meditate on the goodness of God and his indescribable gift (see 2 Corinthians 9:15)

Have a great “preparation” time!

Symbol, Part 1

[Part of Psalm 19 has been set to music in The Creation by Franz Joseph Haydn.   For the “flavor” of his oratorio go to:  http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OwqqfbinUDY]

Using the carol “While shepherds watched their flocks”, Psalm 19:1-14, and Romans 1:18-20, we started to reflect on the concept of SYMBOL within the Christmas tradition.   The actual application to Christmas will come in the next two weeks.

To you, in David’s town, this day, Is born of David’s line
A Savior, who is Christ the Lord, And this shall be the sign,
The heavenly Babe you there shall find, To human view displayed
All meanly wrapped in swathing bands, And in a manger laid.
–Nahum Tate

The carol says: “And this shall be the sign”.  Is the “sign” (symbol), the baby in a manger, the swathing bands, or something else, such as the star?

The big question is, how do symbols work in the context of communication and meaning.

For example, the following are all related to the concept of symbol:  sign,  signpost, meaning, token, seal, indication, diagram, notion, picture, name, denotation, nickname, portent,  harbinger, emblem, gesture, idea, words, event, wonder, mystery, mark, icon, image, object, action, pattern, sacrament.

Psalm 19:1-6 addresses “natural revelation” in symbolic form.
Psalm 19:7-11 addresses “moral revelation” in word (or linguistic) form.
Psalm 19: 12 – 14 is a prayer for purification, prevention, and perfection.

[Note: Mark A Copeland has an excellent outline of this Psalm at http://executableoutlines.com/psa/psa_19.htm]

Closing prayer:  (Psa 19:14 NIV)  May the words of my mouth and the meditation of my heart be pleasing in your sight, O LORD, my Rock and my Redeemer.

More on this topic next week . . .

Solving problems

From Joyce . . .

I am all about solving problems.  In fact, I admit that that’s sort of how I look at life:  What problem/challenge will I address next?  That’s why, when I read from the devotional book given to me recently by a dear friend, I was caught short.  Sarah Young, in her book Jesus Calling, says this:

  • Do not let fixing things be your top priority.  You are ever so limited in your capacity to correct all that is wrong in the world around you  Don’t weigh yourself down with responsibilities that are not your own.  Instead, make your relationship with Me your primary concern.1

Lord Jesus, today help me to care more about resting in you than about conquering my world.
