Last night I discovered a large moth affixed to our porch wall. It was about 6 inches across the wingspan. I have never seen one like this outside a zoo or museum.
I thought someone might enjoy seeing this special part of God’s creation.
If you like you can click on http://www.pbase.com/m3ling/largemoths and see some similar ones.
My conclusion is that it is a giant silk moth but others may know better.

That is a Cecropia moth. When the boys were little we had a number of them to lay eggs in the maples. It was a great biology lesson for the boys to watch them hatch and grow and spin cocoons. We have their picture holding about 13 or so on a screen……. I haven’t seen many in recent years for some reason……… Janis Date: Tue, 13 Aug 2013 01:01:21 +0000 To: riffellj@hotmail.com
Thanks for this note and the site. My father, who was really “into nature” once found a Cecropia (sp?) on a bush in our backyard which amazed me because it was so huge. Beautiful, too. Debbie
